A community of long-term students are currently studying at the school and will be staying throughout the winter months. For them and future students, a new heating system and radiators are starting to be installed in the main school-building. Work is also being planned on separating the bathroom and shower areas and extending the toilets.

The school’s partnership with the local University in Qufu has also developed so that students will also have opportunity to do cultural/language studies and obtain a related visa validated by the University. The program will in the future be included on the school’s website.

Students at the school had grading on the first day of the new month and performed the fist and weapon forms they have been training in.

A new basketball ring has also been put up in the courtyard for students to enjoy in their spare time.

The school has opened up another school facility in the center of Qufu to teach lessons for local students who would like to train during the summer period.

Qufu Master Shi Yan Hao is currently touring with the Shaolin Performance team in Europe and visiting amongst other countries, the UK, France and Holland.

This May, several students of the school visited the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province with Master Shi Yan Chen and were introduced to the Temple Head Abbot, the Venerable Shi Yong Xin.

Students of the school also recently climbed Mount Tai, which is a few hours north of the school and regarded as one of the ‘five sacred mountains’ of China.

From this period onwards at the school, shorter-term students will start to share rooms between two people. Any friends coming to train together are then able to make an advanced request to the school if they wish to see if it’s possible for them to be accommodated in the same room.

On the school’s website’s, the homepage is now available in several languages. If anyone is able to help contribute with improving the translations, please email shaolinskungfu.web@gmail.com. The school is also looking to make partnerships with organisations and school’s abroad that have similar objectives in the study / teaching of traditional Shaolin and Chinese Martial Arts. Last news is that the school’s dog Doudou, has given birth to many beautiful puppies.

Spring is arriving at the school. Work has now been completed on the classroom and library where there is a small collection of books including texts by Confucius, Lao Tzu, Thich Nhat Hanh and others that students are welcome to read during their stay. There are also some (mp3/iPod) audiobooks available for students at the school including (Michel Thomas Method’s) Introductory Course to Chinese Mandarin, that listening to, students can get some basic understanding of the tones and structure of Mandarin.

The school welcomes several new students.

Work has started at the school for providing a library and classroom space for students to study in. Over time, it is hoped there will be a collection of books there such as Buddhist and other texts for students there to read during their stay. Contributions to the library will be most welcome.

A partnership with Qi China International, a martial arts academy based in the UK has been developing with the school in Qufu. Head of Qi China Master Alan Tinnion has written an article for the school’s resources website, learnkungfuinchina.com entitled The Spirit of Gong Fu. The school is appreciative to be working with them in shared objective of promoting the teaching and study of Shaolin martial arts.

The school has recently also made ties with the International Cultural Exchange Center of the local University in Qufu. Meeting with the College Dean, a partnership has been made to allow students of both schools to attend either for academic/ language or martial art study. It is hoped that students of the school will have excellent opportunity for studying Chinese Mandarin with it have the possibility to teach local Chinese students of English.

Airport – Qufu

About 80km from the school, a new airport has come to Qufu. It connects domestic flights to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Any students arriving at the airport can be met there by someone from the school. For a map and more information on getting to the school, please see the website’s travel page.

News from the School

There’s lots of great news from the school…

The school has been recognised and approved by the local city education bureau as a founded center of learning. It means students going there can now apply for an F-Type 6 month student visa that can be extended to a year.

A new master has arrived at the school: Master Shi Yan Qiang, 34th generation Shaolin Warrior Monk who has been part of the shaolin performance team and specialises in Seven star Fist, long-handle sword, double hammers and Shaolin traditional soft weapons forms.

Forming relationships with the local community, Master Shi Yan Jia (Wei Shifu) is to welcome two special new teachers for the school – one will be available to teach a weekly Chinese Calligraphy class and the other is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine working in a local hospital who will be on-hand to take a class on massage and acupuncture.

Chinese Mandarin classes are also being considered and consulted about for future students so they can follow a good text and combine their stay with learning the Chinese language.

Finally, work has now been completed on the school building to heat, renew and insulate it for the winter.
